Day 2 - Filming

Today we concentrated on filming Edwards end scene the actor wasn't able to make it so we had to come up with another way to show him walking to the tent he lives in. Our solution was to do a point of view shot started with him looking up from the picture of him and his wife and then going to sit in the tent.

Day 1 - Filming

These are photos from our first day of filming after we adapted to the situation and changed the storyline slightly. We started at 11am and managed to get the argument scene between Edward and his wife completed making sure we used a variety of camera angles and the story of him losing his job and his wife came across in the clips we shot. We also managed to complete the bench scene where Edward and Joseph meet and where Edward judges Joseph. This went quite smoothly and we got all the camera angles we needed. We also got Joseph and Edwards beginning scenes done where they are getting ready to begin their day. So overall it was a successful day.

New Recces

This will be Tashana’s bathroom it will be used for the opening scene of our short film where Joseph is coming out of the shower and doing up his shirt. The lighting from the window could present an issue, but we are not going to be filming towards the light we will be filming away from it facing the shower. The tripod and camera will be placed next to the toilet so that we could get our shot correct. Our next shot will be an over the shoulder shot, however the camera will have to be handheld to get the actor perfectly in the frame.
This bench is where the most important part of the short film will be. This is where the 2 characters cross paths and judge each other based on stereotypes, it will start with Edward sitting on the bench reading his newspaper and Joseph will join him and try to have a conversation. We will shoot in daylight and place the camera directly opposite the bench so that we have a long shot of both characters. We will also experiment with other angles to see which one suits the scene best.
This is the hallway Joseph will be in when he’s putting on his shoes and getting ready to leave for work. There could be an issue with lighting but we could get around that by not directing the camera at the light for this scene we will use long shots and close ups. The long shot is to show him sitting down and the close up is to show him tying his shoe laces.
This public toilet is for Edwards opening scene where he is getting ready for what the audience thinks is work. We will use both the natural and artificial light in this scene and it will be shot close up to not give away that it is a public toilet so the audience thinks it is his bathroom at home. We will also have a long shot of him carrying a little suitcase which is our subtle hint that he is homeless.
This area of greenery is for the end scene where we find out Edward is homeless and this is where he has been staying. It’s also where the audience get an insight on how he became homeless as he will have a picture on him which will come alive and show him losing his job and wife. This scene will be shot in natural light and it will consist of close ups and long shots. A close up of the picture and a long shot to show him sitting in the grass, fighting with his wife and getting fired.

Team meeting to discuss actors

My team and I had to get together to discuss what we were going to do as our first female actor wasn't reliable and the second one we found wasn't able to film on the day our other actors could, we came to the conclusion that we should just get rid of the female character as we realised it would make things much easier and the story would make more sense. There was then our problem of getting both of our actors on the same day to shoot our bench scene. Our actor to play Edward was only able to film on Sundays and our actor to play Joseph couldn't by this point our deadline had caught up to us so we had to choose someone else to play Joseph and changed his character profile from African to just a stereotypical black guy. This meant some of our pre production documents had to change.

Team meeting after first shoot

Aim • To film the whole of Joesph’s opening scene • To achieve a variety of camera angles with the correct focus for each. Evaluation We came across difficulties with instructions towards are actor but came up with techniques for him to realize completely what we wanted him to accomplish. By giving him clearer delegation. We also had to shoot certain parts again because of the boom pole and crew getting inside the shot. This first shooting was a really good learning curve and it will help us to conduct faster shooting with our other actors and actresses.

Joseph's Role and Props - Actor Isaac

We decided to give each actor an additional sheet of paper to explain their role and what props they will need to bring so that on the filming day they are ready and know exactly what they are doing.
